Report from WDI Mexico - Supreme Court allows children to change 'gender identity'

In Mexico, The Supreme Court of Justice of Nation ruled on 3 March 2022 that minors can change their 'gender identity' legally. It determined that it is unconstitutional to require petitioners to be at least 18 years old to obtain a new birth certificate that matches their self-perceived gender identity. As a result of a sentencing project made by Minister Yasmin Esquivel Mossa, the Supreme Court of Justice unanimously invalidated the second fraction of article 875 from the Civil Code of the Mexican State of Puebla, that required people to be 18 years old or older when requesting the document that recognizes their so called gender identity. Minister Arturo Zaldívar assured that in Mexico, half of children who identify as 'trans' have reported to have been rejected by their parents when they found out about their gender identity and to have had to move out early from their home. He said that in the worst cases they are confined in clinics or camps to erase their identity and that the norm perpetuates violence against them.
The norm was impugned by the Human Rights National Commission, stating that no one under 18 can define their sexual identity. The Supreme Court of Justice criteria will be mandatory for all judges in the country.

Members of WDI, parents, and advocates have planned a day to support Detransitioner Awareness Day on 12 March. We are trying to get national news as always. We are hoping to have photos from many places posted to social media with the hashtag #DetransAwarenessDay or #DetransDay2022 to bring global awareness that there are many detransitioners, we support them, and they need our help. Please visit our website, designed by parents with detransitioners' input and help shine a light on Detransition Awareness Day on 3/12/22. Please consider holding an event to show support for the resilient and often ignored detransitioners. Let's demonstrate that parents are recognizing detransitioners' existence. The time is now to have their voices heard! For more information email us.
